When it just seemed like movie license video games were about to disappear, we get a Star Trek game. The last decent movie games that I can remember are Captain America and The Amazing Spider-Man (it wasn’t too long ago, I suppose), but just being a decent licensed game doesn’t mean that they’re worth purchasing for 60 bucks on launch day. At most, they’re good when they start appearing in bargain bins and you have literally nothing else to play. Even then, I’m sure there are dozens of other options you might want to check out first.
Basically, you get to play as either Kirk or Spock, the only two characters that any casual fans care to remember the names of. Kirk plays like a heavy, going in guns blazing like a mad cowboy on steroids, while Spock relies on stealth and his Vulcan grip to get around the AI enemies. The graphics look decent, but the space battle segments with the Enterprise look pretty good. Even in the game trailer, it appears that these two characters just LOVE jumping off different buildings and cliffs.
Here’s the making-of video.
And of course, they round up the video by announcing some pre-order bonuses. They don’t seem to confirm whether it follows the narrative in the second movie or not, so it could be a whole new story they created for the game, kind of like The Amazing Spider-Man. As the industry becomes more sensitive to spoilers (this game comes out earlier than the movie), even movie-tie-ins have to adjust accordingly, I guess.
The game comes out on April 23rd for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.
