We focus so much on Disney’s new acquisitions that we tend to forget about their original money printing IPs. Sure, they’ve seen a slide in quality with Cars 2 and Brave, and while it may not be ideal for them to be treading in the prequel territory already, hopefully they’ll remember how good they used to be by revisiting one of their older titles. It is a bit worrisome though that the man in charge of the film, Dan Scalon, was never involved in any of the Pixar titles that people actually care about. He’s got writing credits for Cars and this seems to be his first big movie directorial debut. I’m hoping he’s getting a lot of help on the side to make this more than just a commercial success.
Here’s the extended preview with the director.
The scope seems…a bit too small to be as great as the other Pixar movies. It appears to me that they’re going to rely heavily on your Monsters Inc. nostalgia rather than coming up with more imaginative scenarios. This extended preview wasn’t able to win me over, but I’m trying to remain cautiously optimistic for reasons unknown to me. It’s probably that Pixar itch I’ve been dying to scratch since Toy Story 3.
