Everybody had their reservations about the new Justice League movie script being handled by an unproven scribe. Then today, it’s been reported by Badass Digest that Warner Brothers has tossed out the script that Will Beall (Gangster Squad) had written for the movie. Multiple sources (I hate saying that phrase) have confirmed that it was “terrible” and many are wondering whether there’s any hope of this film making it past pre-production.
Some of you may remember that WB recently came out and said they won’t move forward with this project unless Man of Steel is a success. It didn’t sound like they were making a strong stand then and many are speculating that they’re getting cold feet. I say, why did they ever entrust the screenplay to someone who is so unproven? Sure, there are multiple factors at play at all times such as availability, interest, money, etc., but there’s got to be someone out there with a great Justice League story idea just oozing out of their pores. After all, it’s a giant comic book flagship on par with The Avengers. You can’t tell me there’s no one in the industry who isn’t jumping at the opportunity to finally tell a story they’ve been crafting on their own time.
Or better yet, why not go digging into the comic book writers archive? Joss Whedon worked out for Disney. You might say that he’s also had plenty of experience working on shows and movies before, but comic books by nature place importance on the visual aspect of the story. Given a little guidance and I’m sure the best comic book writers in the industry right now could direct a compelling super hero movie that speaks to both the hardcore and casual audience.
Getting cold feet and pulling out now is not an option. Warner Brothers has to act fast and get a script that can pull in some A-list directors right away, or they’ll face years and years of Disney dominance until they can finally squeeze out a win in another ten or fifteen years. Hell, they don’t even need to meet the 2015 deadline that they put on themselves. Give yourselves another two years cushion and work out all the details so you can deliver something that everybody can be proud of.
In the meantime though, you can watch this. I’ve embedded this video because I couldn’t stop thinking about this song while writing this post.
Andy Samberg= Warner Brothers.
Everything he throws= Will Beall’s Justice League script.
Elijah Wood+Ryan Reynolds= Disney
