We’ve heard some crazy casting decisions being made for this movie and now we finally get to read how they’ll all mesh together in the story. Although it’s been confirmed that Paul Giamatti will be involved in the production, they have yet to specify his role so bear that in mind as you read through the official synopsis.
Columbia Pictures announced today that filming has begun on The Amazing Spider-Man™ 2 in New York. The film is the first in the history of the franchise that will be filmed entirely in New York City and New York State.
The sequel to last year’s critical and box office hit The Amazing Spider-Man, the film stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Shailene Woodley, Dane DeHaan, Colm Feore, Paul Giamatti, and Sally Field.
In The Amazing Spider-Man™ 2, for Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), life is busy – between taking out the bad guys as Spider-Man and spending time with the person he loves, Gwen (Emma Stone), high school graduation can’t come quickly enough. Peter hasn’t forgotten about the promise he made to Gwen’s father to protect her by staying away – but that’s a promise he just can’t keep. Things will change for Peter when a new villain, Electro (Jamie Foxx), emerges, an old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, and Peter uncovers new clues about his past.
I really like the fact that they’re introducing Harry Osborn as an old friend here because I’m a firm believer in creating a universe that exists and flow outside of our peripheral vision. I don’t like it when everything unfolds before our eyes as the story progresses, and it honestly wouldn’t make sense to introduce Harry out of nowhere when Oscorp had apparently existed for some time. I’m assuming he returns home from studying abroad or something. I don’t know. Whatever rich kids do off-screen.
Jamie Foxx also noted in an interview with MTV here that his character, Max Dillon, is a man neglected by society and discovers his own self-importance through Spiderman. Jamie (we carpool sometimes) says that his character feels like he’s Spiderman’s partner and he goes through a tragedy that eventually transforms him into Electro. He sounds like a sympathetic character who is far removed from the world. I suspect that he’ll turn into a full blown villain when his brand of justice doesn’t sit well with Spiderman and the two duke it out in a bout of philosophy.
Another new face here is Colm Feore (Thor), but none of the reports I’ve read seem to be able to confirm what role he’s playing either. Perhaps he’s the shadowy figure (who a lot of people are speculating as Norman Osborn) in the end credit scene who talks to Dr. Connors about Peter’s parents. Whoever he plays, I just hope they’ll finally stop teasing us about this big secret and let us in on it in the sequel.
