So Kevin Feige has been pretty loose lipped about any information regarding Marvel movies as of late. In a recent interview with MTV, he announced that Edgar Wright’s “Ant-Man” film will officially kick off the third phase of their Marvel movie universe that they’ve crafted over several years. While Ant-Man is sort of regarded as the Aquaman of Marvel (meaning people tend to have dumb, uninformed opinions of him), it appears that Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World) was interested in making the movie from the start, as Kevin Feige detailed a lunch he had with the director back in 2004. He’s a damn good director and a great storyteller, and I think he’s earned everyone’s benefit of doubt regardless of what’s on his plate. Plus, he’s looking to make the tone more lighthearted, if not, comedic, which is his forte. He’s playing to his strength while delivering a story about a very fascinating character, so I’m expecting good things.
Kevin (we’re friends) also let slip that they’re working on making a solo Doctor Strange movie. It’ll take part in phase three of Marvel movie universe along with Ant-man, but there are no current news about anyone being attached to the project. However, there was a rumor a while back that Viggo Mortensen was a possible candidate to play the mystic arts expert and since then, I haven’t been able to picture anyone else in the role. I hope that rumor bears fruit and we see him suit up along with the rest of the team.
Now here we come to the delicious meat of the article: what other heroes deserve a shot at making the roster? I wrote an article a few weeks back about Marvel being interested in rebooting Blade, but I also believe that he’s more suited to teaming up with other street level heroes to take down lesser threats. That means I’m also ruling out Daredevil, whose rights returned to Marvel recently as well. I just feel that there would be a redundancy in the team if there were too many heroes with no power and they would be sharing the spotlight too much to stand out on their own.
It’s a really hard question to answer since they can’t add any mutants to the team (which means they can’t use like, 300 something characters with useful assets) seeing as how they all belong to Fox at the moment, but I’ve done my best to compile a list:
1) Black Panther
He’s got resources, a whole country under his rule, is a genius tactician, a genius in general, and is an effective hand-to-hand combatant. He’s basically Batman, but audacious enough to wear a crown in public.
2) Captain Marvel (formerly Miss Marvel)
She can offer more fire power to the roster, can cover more grounds as one of three Avengers (Iron Man, Thor) who can fly, and lower the ratio of men to women. Just barely.
He’s an android who can emit laser from his eyes, fly, and phase through things by becoming intangible. He’s also a creation of Ultron, which is a great way to introduce the next Avengers’ villain. There’s not enough here for a solo movie, but he’d be a good addition to the team.
He’s got super human strength, flight, durability, and the ability to absorb energy directed against him and release it back. He’s also ripe for a Guardians of the Galaxy cameo.
So there’s my list. It adds a lot of punch to the team and they serve multiple functions to deal with different kinds of threats. Add to that Ant-Man and Doctor Strange and you got a pretty well-rounded roster. If you have any other suggestions, please drop a comment below. I’d love to hear it.
