Moviepilot recently posited that Ryan Gosling may be a good, possibly the best, choice to play The Flash. Now, friends of our site know how much we adore Ryan Gosling here on 2cool4blog, but should our discussion just end there? It also appears that Ryan Gosling isn’t interested in putting on a costume and that he feels he’s already played a super hero in the movie Drive, so unless some producers push hard to get him on board, it seems unlikely that he’ll sign on to play The Flash or any other super heroes for that matter.
So who else is out there? A few years back, there was a rumor going around that Bradley Cooper was another possible candidate, but that did not amount to much, what with certain complications involving Green Lantern halting any other DC adaptations from happening for some time. But now with The Justice League movie set to premiere in 2015, perhaps they should revisit that talk because he’s still got the looks and is a big enough draw to make a solo movie later down the line.
Personally though, I’d like to see Michael Rosenbaum’s name floating somewhere in the list of possible candidates. For those who don’t know him, he was most well-known for his role in Smallville as Lex Luthor, but he also played The Flash in Justice League Unlimited, albeit, as a voice actor. But when I remember back to the cartoon, you can’t help but love the humor and humanity he brought to the character. His rendition of the Flash was basically a class clown who could be counted on when the chips were down, loved by the public, and had a deep understanding of the plight of his enemies. There was even an episode where Flash had a good talk with one of the villain from his rogue gallery at a bar and eventually convinced him to turn himself over and get the psychiatric treatment that he needed. You may say that this could all be credited to the strong writing of the show, but I feel Rosenbaum’s performance was what brought it up a few more notches.
Then again, both Bradley Cooper and Michael Rosenbaum are pretty old, so that perhaps was just a bit short-sighted on my part. I suppose Ryan Gosling is indeed the best candidate for the role…unless Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory has anything to say about that.
