If you grew up during the 80’s or the 90’s, you can’t help but know or know of Dragon Ball Z. In fact, they won’t allow you to forget it, with the animated cartoon being revived several times through DVD releases and a re-edited version of the series having aired on television recently, not to mention a Dragon Ball related video game hitting the store shelves annually like Madden. I’m an avid fan myself, and now seventeen years after the last Dragon Ball Z movie, we are graced with a brand new movie that takes place after the Majin-Buu saga, which means that it is more canon than most of the DBZ films.
Here is an excerpt from Wikipedia :
The events of Battle of Gods take place some years after the battle with Majin Boo, which determined the fate of the entire universe. Goku and friends are at Bulma’s birthday party. Wiss and Bills, the God of Destruction, are tasked with maintaining some sort of balance in the universe. After awakening from a long slumber, Bills is visited by Wiss and he learns that the galactic overlord Freeza has been defeated by a Super Saiyan from the North Quadrant of the universe named Goku, who is also a former student of the North Kaiō. Ecstatic over the new challenge, Goku ignores Kaiō’s advice and battles Bills, but he is easily overwhelmed and defeated. Bills leaves, but his eerie remark of “Is there nobody on Earth more worthy to destroy?” lingers on. Seeking stronger warriors, Bills arrives on Earth and confronts the other heroes, defeating them one after another.

Now…does it look like another cookie-cutter adventure from the creators that pit Goku and his friends against a foe they might not be ready to face? Absolutely. Do I still care? Yes, because it’s been some time since we last saw an animated Dragon Ball Z film, so it’d be interesting to see this version of the cast in updated animation form with modern budget. Also, Akira Toriyama will be heavily involved in the production, so everything looks good on paper to me.
Now if you need any more convincing, just look at the promotional poster image. Vegeta is donning his bad ass Saiyan battle armor again, and Goku appears to be fighting the Easter Bunny in an ancient Egyptian attire. I’d say that is well worth the price of over 9000 admissions. Hah.
